What Happiness!

Jātaka 010: Sukhavihāri Jātaka (JTA 08)

Ashin Sarana:

The Sākyan prince Anuruddha persuaded the head of Sākyan family, Bhaddiya, to ordain with him, a requirement Anuruddha had to fulfill to get permission from his mother. They left the palace together with Ānanda, Devadatta, and the barber Upāli, together with an armed escort, but on the way they dismissed the escort and, despite they dismissed Upāli to take their treasures back to the palace, Upāli hung them on a tree and join them, gaining ordination first to humble their birth pride. Bhaddiya became an Arahant first and, so happy, caused doubt in his fellow venerable monks. The Buddha then explained that in a previous life the Buddha was Bhaddiya’s accomplished teacher and, on a way from Himalayas, assigned Bhaddiya to be the leader of his students as he was invited to stay in the palace due to his old age. Bhaddiya once visited his teacher but, when the king came in the morning, he did not rise up as he was enjoying the bliss of freedom from fear that he previously experienced as a king and also the bliss of his deep meditative attainments.
