IV. 3. Viḍūḍabha Wreaks Vengeance on the Sākiyas

One day, the king of Savatthi decided that he wanted to serve 500 monks alms, and so he asked the Buddha to send him a monk regularly, and the Buddha assigned Elder Ananda the duty. Although, after a week of diligently giving their meals by himself he neglected his duties for 3 days which made all the monks except for Elder Ananda to lose faith in the king. On the fourth day the king prepared food for 500 monks again but seeing how only Elder Ananda had come angered him. After the Buddha had told the king that none of the monks came due to their loss he faith he decided to win back their confidence by getting a maiden from the Sakiyas into his family. However, soon after the king had received and maiden he realized she was the daughter of a slave women. IV. 3. Viḍūḍabha Wreaks Vengeance on the Sākiyas

After the king had realized the Sakiyas gave him a slave women he decided that he would destroy them. However, the Buddha, not wanting his kinsmen to be slaughtered intervened three times before seeing the Sakiyas destruction was inevitable. When the Sakiyas saw the king’s army approaching they tried to frighten them off with a display of their skill in archery. However, the Sakiyas were still attacked, except only the followers of Mahanama were spared. After this the army slept by a river and since the kings desires had been fulfilled he was carried off by a storm flooding the rivers to become food for the fishes.
