In Rajagaha, a terrible plague broke out into a household, killing nearly everyone except for the son of the treasurer, named Kumbhaghosaka, who instructed his son to come back after the plague had disappeared and dig up 40 crores of gold buried under the household. When he returned, he got a job in hopes he would be able to make money without using his wealth. However, the King suspected he was a rich man and got a way for Kumbhaghosaka expose his mass fortune. When Kumbhaghosaka was young, a plague broke out and his parents urged him to run and save himself, they promised to stow away their wealth for him to recover when it was safe. Kumbhaghosaka came back after 12 years and reclaimed his wealth, however he knew that a suddenly wealthy man would be suspicious. So he set out to work. The king heard his voice however, and knew it belonged to a rich man. He had Kumbhagosaka investigated and his wealth was revealed. The king was impressed by his wisdom and granted him the job of treasurer and his daughter in marriage.
