I. 11. The Righteous Lay Brother

In Savatthi, there lived a Senior layman who distributed alms to monks. After some time, a disease attacked the layman and his body began to fail, so he sent word to the Buddha to bring him monks. The layman told the monks to recite the Satipattana Sutta and at that moment, from the Six Worlds of Gods, many deities told the layman to leave the world but the layman was unwilling to be interrupted in listening to the law and said "Wait". The monks thinking that he was speaking to them stopped their recitation and left. The layman died and was reborn in heaven while the monks went to the Buddha and told him what had happened when they were preaching but the Buddha told the monks that the layman was speaking to the gods.
