VII. 7. The Loss of an Eye

There was an Elder monk who needed a novice to help him, so his supporter gave the elder his son, and when the Elder started shaving the son's hair he immediately gained Arahatship. They also shared lodgings because while the novice took care of the elders lodgings he neglected finding his own. However, to prevent the elder from committing the offense of sleeping in common he sat up for the entire night. The next day, the elder caused the novice to go out, and accidentally put his eye out in the process. The novice did his duties without mentioning it at all and when the elder discovered what he did he was overcome with remorse. The novice took the elder to the Buddha was able to comfort the elder, saying that it was the round of existences to blame.
