314 Lohakumbhi Jātaka (JTA 119) The Four Cries from Hell Ashin Sarana:
Yamona’s drawing When the King Pasenadi ruled Savatthi, he had a desire for a married beautiful woman so he tried to get rid of her husband. On that night be heard four very loud and scary sound ‘ Du’ ‘Sa’ ‘Na’ and ‘So’ . These cries so terrified him so he asked Brahmins for advice. They told the king that his life and the kingdom were in danger . To prevent that , they have to perform the fourfold sacrifice. The queen advised the king to consult the Buddha Gotama. Then the Buddha told the story about the past. Long ago , when king Brahmadatta was ruling Baranasi, he was terrified by the four chilling cries . His advisors told him the same to sacrifice creatures to avoid the dangers to his life and the kingdom. The wise ascetic explained to the king that those sounds were from the four men who were guilty of misconduct with the wives of their neighbors. Those men were reborn in hell , suffering for thirty thousand years in burning liquid. When they happened to rise to the surface for the first time , they cried . But the time they were on the surface was so short that they could only finished a single syllable. ‘Du ‘ means ‘Due to list and greed, my life on earth was shots and suffering here is long . ‘Sa’ means Sour is my fate for what I did.’Na’ means Now I understand the suffering. ‘So’ means So heavy was my sin that I have suffered here so long.
