V. 9. Sumana the Gardener

There was a gardener named Sumana who carries eight measures of jasmine flowers for King Bimbisāra. One day, he was walking through a town with the flowers and saw the Teacher with a big group of monks. He honored the Exalted One with the flowers, not caring whether the king would kill or banish him for doing that, the eight handfuls surrounding the Teacher on all four sides. The whole town came forward and gave alms before the Teacher, which gave the gardener was overjoyed. When he went home and told his wife, his wife was a simpleton and told him that the king is harsh and will punish him severely, also telling the king about what happened. The king was a Noble Disciple, knowing that the woman is a simpleton, acting angry even though his mind was at peace. After dismissing her, he went to go visit the Teacher and invited him to his palace. The Teacher sat on a pavilion after asking the king for it, wanting to make sure the good deed of the gardener. The king gifted the gardener Eightfold Gifts for his good deed, the Teacher saying he wouldn’t enter the state of suffering for hundred thousand cycles, and became a Private Buddha named Sumana. There was a gardener who would everyday, present flowers to the king, but one day, he saw the Buddha and honored him with the flowers instead, saying that the king could kill him or banish him for this action. When the gardeners wife learned of this, she abandoned his husband thinking that he was a simpleton for what he did. When the king learned of this, he immediately went to accompany him instead of getting angry at the Gardener. After the Buddha left, the king asked the gardener about the flowers, and the gardener explained what he did, for this, the king rewarded him, and Sumana would then never enter a state of suffering for a hundred thousands cycles of time from the merit of his deed.
