There were two brothers, Culla Kāḷa and Mahā Kāḷa who traveled abroad with caravans to find goods to sell. Mahā Kāḷa listens to the law one day, and becomes a monk to pursue enlightenment, his youngest brother, Culla, follows in hopes to eventually dissuade him. Mahā goes on to practice the Duty of Contemplation in funeral grounds, he differentiates Decay and Death and attains Arahatship. During a visit to the Kāḷas’ household, the two brothers wives scheme to bring the monks back to the world, it works against Culla but it fails before Mahā.

The elder brother had received a topic of meditation from his teacher, the Buddha, who gave him the task of observing “The Pure Practice of the Burning Grounder. The elder brother went to a burning ground where he asked the keeper of the grounds to find him a subject of meditation, which the keeper did so, leading to the monk’s Arahatship, and he decided to return to the Buddha, completing his meditation.

Thanks to the Teacher's instructions, Brother3 attained Arahatship, so when all the brother's wives tried to bring them back to the village, it worked on Brother1 but not Brother3.

Maha Kala listened to the Buddha instructing him to the pure practice of a burning grounder which help lead him to attain arahantship. On the other hand, Culla Kala was always thinking about his house life. The Buddha and the Congregation of Monks traveling from place to place arrived and Setavya. Culla Kala's wives hearing that the Buddha was coming planned to take their husband back and so Maha Kala's wives hearing this also tried to take him back but failed.
