When the Buddha learned that many bhikkhus were engaging in improper practices, such as running errands, acting as doctors, and telling fortunes, he summoned the community of bhikkhus and told them that these practices are not only suitable for them, but also dangerous. He said that those who even engage in these twenty-one wrong means of livelihood may even be reborn in hell, then, he told this story of the past. Long, long, ago, the Bodhisatta was born into a Candala family, and one day, his parents packed a basket of rice and curries for him and set him off on an errand. At the same time, another young man named Satadhamma, the son of a wealthy family in Baranasi, set out in the same direction with no provisions for his journey. The two met on the road and went on the journey together. When it was time for breakfast, the candala opened his basket and offered some food to Sattadhamma, but he replied that he doesn’t want anything from a low fellow like him. After tramping along the whole day, the candala sat down and started to eat, but the brahmin, having eaten nothing at all that day, was very hungry. When the candala wasn’t offering him any food, he thought to himself, “He’s eating every bit himself! He must know I’m starving.” He wonders why he’s not offering him any, but he’s so hungry that he begs for it. Even though there are only scraps of the food left, he takes it anyway and eats it, but when he did, he felt pangs of regret and thought to himself, “How could I, a high-born brahmin, have done such a thing?”, “I have eaten the leftovers of a low-born outcaste!”, and started vomiting food and blood. He died alone and forlorn in the jungle. Having concluded this story, Buddha identified as the young candala.Kids’ drawing
