V. 6. From Vice to Virtue
Tiṁsamattapāṭheyyakabhikkhūnaṁ vatthu
Kaitlyn's summary:
This instruction was given by Buddha while he was in Jetavana with reference to 30 Patheyyaka monks. The Exalted One first preached the Lawa to these men in Kappasika Grove where they were looking for a woman. At that time, all the monks received bowls and robes from supernatural power. They took upon themselves the 13 Pure Practices, returned after a long time to the Buddha, listened to his discourse on the Beginningless, and before leaving their seats, attained Arahatship. The monks began a discussion in the Hall of Truth about how short it took the other monks to perceive the law. The Buddha hearing this explained that it wasn't the first time the 30 monks committed sin. In each of their past lives, this same situation happened. It was solely through merit acquired by this act that they attained Arahatship.
