I.7. "Devadatta Wars an Unbecoming Robe"
Devadattavatthu
Yarzar's summary:
One day, Venerable Sariputta was preaching the law about the blessing of wealth and the blessing of retinue. Where one who gives and urges to give would receive these blessing for a hundred thousands state of existences. A lay disciple listening to Venerable Sariputta decided to invite the Chief Disciple to a meal and asked others to also give alms to the monks. One householder gave a robe worth thousands of pieces of gold and the monks decided to give it to Devadatta, (the monks) soon realizing that the robe did not “become” him. The Buddha explained this had happened before in a previous existence and proceeded to tell a story of the past.
