Once, Elder Channa reviled 2 Chief Disciples. The monks, learning about this, told the Teacher, who sent for him and admonished him. Elder Channa was silent for a while but went out and abused the Elders again. The Teacher sent for him and admonished him again and again. Even after all those admonitions, Elder Channa would still abuse the Elders. Finally, the Teacher called all the monks and said that as long as he remained alive, Elder Channa would not listen to anyone. So, the Teacher directed Ananda to inflict upon Channa with a punishment, brahmadanda. After the decease of the Teacher, Channa was summoned and after hearing the sentence Channa was too overwhelmed with sorrow. So, he performed his duties faithfully and became an Arahat with Supernatural Faculties.
