II.8. A Monk Attains Arahatship Aññatarabhikkhussa vatthu
Kaitlyn's summary:
The Teacher gave religious instruction while he was at Jetvana with a reference to a certain monk. This monk had obtained from the Teacher a Subject of Meditation leading to Arahatship & retired to the forest. However, as much as he struggled, he was unable to attain Arahatship. So, he decided to ask the Teacher to give him a subject of Meditation that works better with his needs. So, he set out to meet the Teacher. On the way, the monk saw that the great forest was on fire. He climbed up to a mountain, started to concentrate his mind on the fire, and spoke these words "Even as this fire advances, consuming all obstacles both great and small, so also ought I to advance, consuming all obstacles both great and small by the Fire of Knowledge of the Noble Path.". The Teacher heard this monk's thoughts and sent the monk an image of himself as if they were sitting face to face with that monk and told him that "A monk who delights in heedfulness and views heedlessness with fear advances like a fire, consuming attachments both small and great." The monk then consumed all the Attachments & attained Arahatship, together with the Supernatural Faculties.
