VI. 8. A Pack of Vagabonds

The Buddha visited Veranja during his First Period of Enlightenment at the invitation of Brahman Veranja with 500 monks. There was a famine in Veranja and the Brahman became under the spell of Mara to such extent that he did not give a thought to the Buddha. The monks went for alms, but came back, empty-handed and exhausted. The Buddha stayed for three months and left for Savatthi. 500 eaters of refuse, lived in the Jetavana Monastery and did nothing but misbehave. The monks told the Buddha and He explained that this was not the first time the 500 eat of refusers had been misbehaving.
