Biography of Ashin Sarana

A Brief Biography of Ashin Sarana

A Buddhist monk originally from the Czech Republic, now in Myanmar. After successfully finishing the Catholic Highschool in the Czech city of Pilsen, I studied business English for one year and then decided to become a Buddhist monk. I traveled to Sri Lanka, where I became a novice and studied at the University of Buddhism and Pali. After three years of university study of Buddhism (where I earned my BA degree in Buddhist Philosophy, Pali Language, and Religious Studies) and four years of studying the Sinhalese language in Sri Lanka, I left the island hoping that I will find my Enlightenment in Myanmar.

I have been in Myanmar for 9 years. For the first five years, I trained in meditation and Buddhist knowledge under the masters of the meditation center Shwe Oo Min Tawya, Mingalardon. Now I have been a meditation master myself for over four years, taking care of foreign meditators who come to see me and traveling to various Asian and European countries, the USA, to teach there as well. I have been teaching kids of all ages & adults as well, both online and visitors, until today. Several months in 2020 I conducted a class of Basic Buddhism for kids aged 3-5 years. From 2020 until today (June 2022) I have been conducting four classes of Basic Buddhism for children, two for preteens of 6-10 years of age, and two for teens aged 11 and up. My interests are in the Buddha’s teachings, meditation, and science as well. I have recently finished a course on Early Childhood Care and Education, but I also studied calculus and psychology at the University of Pittsburgh (through https://outlier.org).

From August 2021 until today I have been teaching and guiding meditation in the Czech Republic to my visitors and through online meetings, conducting one-day meditation retreats in Lotus Center, Prague (April 16 2022 and May 29 2022), conducting online meditation retreats for Vietnamese students (10-day intensive retreats in Dec 2021, Feb 2022, May-June 2022, a 60-day intensive retreat in March-April 2022, a 30-day intensive retreat in June-July 2022), twice a week teaching Dhamma offline to Czech and Vietnamese people who come for group meditation & Dhamma talk, and also online through Zoom, three times a week. On the 11th of November 2021, my donors registered the organization Vinayalankara Meditation Center at the government of the Czech Republic to take care of my monasteries and Dhamma teaching in the Czech Republic. Soon after that, the organization purchased land and a house in the Czech Republic, Tachov, which was made into a monastery and I became the chief abbot of that place. Now we gradually work on making the monastery a habitable place for monks, nuns, and lay meditators. In Dec 2021 I was admitted to Liberty University of US Virginia, for a Master’s degree program of Clinical Mental Health Counseling.
